U.S. President Donald Trump has once again stated that talks with Iran are progressing well and are close to reaching an agreement.
Trump also warned that if these negotiations fail, he will launch attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure.
Donald Trump said:
“Our talks with Iran are going very well, and we are now close to reaching an agreement. But remember, if these talks fail or do not turn into an agreement, you will see how we strike Iran’s energy facilities.”
The U.S. President also said in another statement that Washington is engaged in serious discussions with what he described as a new and more reasonable Iranian regime, while again repeating threats against its energy infrastructure.
Trump stated that the United States is in serious talks with a new Iranian regime and that, as a result, U.S. military operations in Iran could come to an end.
He added:
“There has been significant progress, but if for any reason a deal is not reached quickly—which it likely will be—and if the Strait of Hormuz is not immediately opened for trade, we will end our presence in Iran in such a way that all their power generation facilities, oil wells, Kharg Island, and possibly all desalination plants will be completely destroyed—facilities we have deliberately not touched so far.”
Meanwhile, Iran has rejected any negotiations with the United States, stating that during what it calls aggression, defending its territory and people is its priority.
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that no talks have taken place with the U.S. side over the past 31 days.
Spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Esmail Baghaei, said:
“Our position is very clear. At a time when U.S. military aggression continues intensely, we are using all our efforts and capabilities to defend the Iranian nation. We remember our past experiences and will not forget the betrayal committed against diplomacy twice within a single year.”
This comes as White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said that negotiations between the United States and Iran are proceeding well and are ongoing.
She added that the Iranian officials the U.S. is currently engaging with appear more rational behind the scenes compared to previous leaders.
