HRW: Pakistani Police Hand Over Dozens of Imran Khan’s Supporters to the Army for Trial

At the peak of the political crisis in Pakistan, the International Human Rights Watch reported that the police handed over 33 supporters of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to the Pakistan Army to try them in a military court instead of a civilian court.

According to the decision of the Pakistan Army, these civilians will be held countable in the military courts, which crowded the sensitive military centers after the arrest of Imran Khan.

The International Human Rights Watch said in its report that the trial of civilians in military courts makes the country fail in its commitments regarding the protection of human rights.

In the report, Patricia Gassman, the head of the Asia section of HRW, asked the government of Pakistan to put an end to the violation of human rights by investigating their cases by an impartial civil court.

Gassman added: “Pakistan’s government has the right to prosecute those who have committed violence. However, it can only be done through a neutral and civil court. Pakistan’s military courts, which have secret procedures, cannot arrest civilians, even if they are accused of crimes against the military.”

The former Pakistan Prime Minister, Imran Khan, said that with the imposing of bans on Tehreek-e-Insaf Party supporters, Pakistan has dropped from 129th place to 140th place in the international index of the rule of law.

According to Imran Khan, due to the lack of rule of law, Pakistan is currently in the category of Sudan and Myanmar.

Khan added: “Today we are in Sudan and Myanmar’s category. Without the rule of law, we will have no democracy and no future.”

On the other hand, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif rejected Imran Khan’s proposal for negotiations and pointed to him, saying that instead of negotiations, supporters of anarchy should be held accountable for what resulted in destroying public wealth.

Sharif added: “Those anarchists and arsonists who wear the clothes of politicians and attack the symbols of the state are not worthy of discussion. They should be held accountable for their armed actions.”

Political analysts called Pakistan’s recent unrest a conspiracy of the army and added that the army has encountered Pakistan with a serious risk at the moment.

Along with the political disaster, Pakistan is currently facing an economic and social disaster, but Tehreek-e-Insaf Party members have claimed that these are all a conspiracy of the Army.
