The foreign ministers of Afghanistan and Iran discussed a range of issues during a telephone conversation. Afghanistan’s foreign minister expressed satisfaction over efforts to prevent the negative impacts of the current situation in Iran, alongside discussing bilateral relations, and described regional security and stability as being in the interest of all countries.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Muttaqi emphasized the priority of diplomacy and dialogue with all sides in Iran, describing this approach as the best option for all parties there.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan expressed satisfaction over efforts to prevent the adverse consequences of the current situation in Iran and described regional security and stability as beneficial for all. Amir Khan Muttaqi, while stressing the importance of prioritizing diplomacy and dialogue, described continued engagement and the path of diplomacy as the best option for all sides.”

According to the statement, Iran’s foreign minister praised Afghanistan’s position regarding the current political situation in Iran and described bilateral relations between the two countries as developing.

Seyed Abbas Araqchi described visits and meetings between senior Afghan and Iranian officials as positive and expressed satisfaction over the strengthening of trade cooperation.

Political analyst Rohullah Hotak said: “In recent years, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has had good political and trade relations with Iran, which aligns with the fundamental principles of the Islamic Emirate’s foreign policy. Prioritizing positive engagement with neighboring countries and strengthening regional security and stability helps build relations based on mutual interests. Since the Islamic Emirate returned to power in 2021, practical political engagement with Iran has been established.”

Analysts describe Afghanistan–Iran relations as historical and cultural, saying the two countries share many commonalities that encourage them to maintain good and close relations.

They believe that strengthening trade and economic relations with Iran could compensate for much of Afghanistan’s trade disruption with Pakistan and shift Afghanistan’s trade dependence from Islamabad toward Tehran and Central Asian countries.

Political analyst Khalil Ahmad Nadem said: “Iran and Afghanistan are neighboring countries and share many cultural and historical commonalities. Afghanistan is a landlocked country and therefore has a strong need for Iran. After relations with Pakistan deteriorated, all Afghans are now making use of Iranian ports.”

Senior Afghan and Iranian officials have emphasized further strengthening relations at a time when Kabul–Tehran Diplomatic, trade and economic relations over the past nearly five years have been considered good.

In addition, during this period, visits and meetings at the level of the foreign ministers of both sides have also taken place.
