Amnesty International discussed issues related to Afghan women’s education, human rights, media and freedom of expression, desert courts, arbitrary arrests and many other topics in its recent report.

It is stated that despite the general decree of amnesty, military and security personnel of the previous government were arbitrarily arrested, imprisoned by the forces of the IE and their murder cases were registered.

The report reads: “Hundreds of cases of self-inflicted murder, torment and execution have been registered in Afghanistan after the rule of the Taliban. Among those killed and tortured are a number of military and security personnel of the former regime and members of anti-government groups of the Taliban. According to the report of UNAMA, 237 cases of desert courts were registered from August 15, 2021 to June 15, 2022.”

According to the report, the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is shown to be very critical and it is said that the economic situation of Afghans is deteriorating after the IE came to power.

The report reads: “Afghanistan has been a poor country since the beginning, but after the re-establishment of the Taliban in 2021, the country has been suppressed due to isolation and its people are encountering deep poverty. According to the reports of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, 97 percent of Afghans are living in poverty, while the rate was 47 percent in 2020.”

The report also called the situation of journalists and media in Afghanistan alarming and added that due to the bans, most of the media are impelled to self-censor and a large number of journalists have been forced to leave the country.

The report reads: “The limitation of media activities and the growing fear atmosphere on media workers have caused many media outlets to collapse. Due to the arbitrary arrest and torture of journalists, many media outlets have self-censored and a large number of journalists have been forced to leave the country due to violence and fear.”

Amnesty International also mentioned the restrictions on the education of Afghan girls and it was stated that after the arrival of the IE, many bans were imposed on the social life of Afghan women and girls.

The report reads: “When Taliban came to power, they closed the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and instead established the Ministry of Vice and Virtue, which imposed restrictions on Afghan women and girls. The women who protested in response were illegally arrested and tortured. Afghan girls have been banned from studying beyond 6th grade, and they have been banned from going to universities since December.”

The IE has not yet reacted to the recent report of the Amnesty International, but the Interim Government has previously rejected such reports by international organizations and institutions.

In the report of the Amnesty International, it is also stated that many Afghans have been internally displaced or have been forced to leave the country due to bad economic situation and the fear caused by the actions if the IE.
