The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) launched its 2023-2025 strategic framework for supporting Afghans.
The purpose of the strategic framework is to prioritize the needs and rights of vulnerable people in Afghanistan including women, children, internally displaced persons, refugees, ethnic and religious minorities.
The UN Secretary-General Special Representative for Afghanistan, Roza Otunbayeva, called the framework a strong proposal for the people of Afghanistan.
“Our strategic framework is a strong proposal to deliver assistance to the people of Afghanistan, addressing their humanitarian and basic needs and complementing the ongoing process of life-saving humanitarian assistance.” Otunbayeva added.
The strategic framework, which was prepared in consultation with UN member states and partners, has identified three complementary and mutually reinforcing common priorities for the human needs of Afghans.
The United Nations Strategic Framework reads: “In close consultation with our Member States and partners, the United Nations Country Team has identified three complementary and mutually reinforcing shared priorities, such as sustainable essential services, economic opportunities and resilient livelihoods, and thirdly, that address social cohesion, solidarity, gender equality, human rights and the rule of law, because it supports the basic human needs of Afghans.”
Daniel Andres, the UN humanitarian aid coordinator for Afghanistan, said that the UN assistance is not enough to prevent the growing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
He added: “The United Nations and its partners understand that humanitarian aid alone will not be enough to solve the large-scale and increasing human suffering of Afghans in the medium and long term. Will the UN be able to fully implement the framework? It depends on the actions of the ruling authorities and the support of donors.”
Political analysts request continuous support of the United Nations from Afghanistan and insist that the UN should spend its assistance on productive projects in Afghanistan, as a result of which job opportunities will be provided to Afghans.
UNAMA is announcing a strategic framework for supporting Afghans at a time when, according to its figures, 28 million Afghans currently need assistance.
