The US Welcomes the UNSC’s Recent Resolution on Afghanistan

Earlier this week, the United Nations Security Council held a meeting regarding the bans imposed on Afghan women by the IE and the majority censured the prohibitions in a joint statement.

The members of the Security Council decided by an overwhelming majority that they will not remain silent against the restrictions imposed on Afghan women by the IE.

Meanwhile, a number of US officials involved in the Afghanistan issue acclaimed the Security Council’s announcement.

The US Special Representative for Afghanistan, Thomas West, welcomed the decision and complimented the common position of the Council regarding the employment and education of Afghan women.

West added: “The resolution of the UNSC strongly decries the sanctions imposed on Afghan women, who make up half of the population of Afghanistan. I am proud to see such unity in support of Afghans.”

Meanwhile, the US Special Envoy for Afghan Women, Girls and Human Rights Rina Amiri, supported the resolution and censured the sanctions imposed on Afghan women and girls and their continuation by the IE. She called the bans ferocious action.

She added: “We must support all Afghan women who are raising their voices to get their rights and meaningful inclusion in society. The UNSC resolution, which condemns the imposition of severe sanctions against Afghan women and girls; It shows our clear and common position in this regard. We will never accept the restrictions imposed by the Taliban on the rights of half of Afghanistan’s population. The Taliban should reconsider these cruel sanctions.”

The former US Special Representative for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, has also welcomed the recent resolution of the Security Council.

He added: “I welcome the resolution of the UNSC regarding Afghanistan. The resolution reflects the international demands regarding Afghanistan as a whole and especially the rights of Afghan women and girls. It is very important for the international community to work on a policy regarding how to interact with Afghanistan, for this the meeting held in Qatar is a good opportunity.”

Some political analysts consider the results of the next meeting dubious as there had been similar meetings held in the past most of which were held in third countries and were carried out without the presence of the IE; therefore it did not have tangible results.

US officials are talking about the interaction of the international community with Afghanistan at a time when, last week, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammad, announced the holding of a meeting on Afghanistan in Qatar and said that the negotiations regarding the official recognition of the IE will also be carried out and her remarks gave rise to broad reactions.
