UN Expert Group: Women, Girls Systematically Oppressed in Afghanistan

UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, Richard Bennett, and UN expert group came to Afghanistan on April 27, 2023, to investigate the humanitarian situation, including the rights of Afghan women and girls.

The visit of the UN delegation to Afghanistan, which lasted for eight days, ended on May 04, 2023.

After the return of the UN delegation, they expressed concern about the rights of Afghan women and girls in a press release and said that Afghan women and girls are being systematically oppressed in Afghanistan.

The news release reads: “Afghan women and girls are systematically oppressed. The international community cannot overlook the rights of Afghan women and girls. Afghan women and girls’ right and their meaningful participation in important cases should be one of the priorities of the United Nations. Afghan women and girls should not be used as a tool to achieve political goals, and their rights should never be used as a tool for negotiations.”

In the press release, the imposition of bans on the work of female staff in governmental and non-governmental institutions, especially in the offices of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), has been called a new act of sanctions against women’s rights and added that the decree has made the situation of the United Nations in Afghanistan difficult.

The press release reads: “The IE’s ban on the work of female employees in UNAMA continues to tighten the ban on the work of female staff in non-governmental organizations. This decree has caused UN to face a difficult situation.”

The experts have once again asked the IE to fulfill its promises related to Afghan women and remain committed to international principles in this regard.

The press release reads: “The UN requests the Taliban authorities to respect the principles of human rights and especially in terms of the Convention on the Prevention of Discrimination against Women and stand by their commitments and respect all rights to support and protect Afghan women and girls.”

Meanwhile, a number of political analysts want the IE to allow Afghan girls and women to work and study in line with Afghan tradition and Islamic principles; so that the world’s pretexts will be abolished and also similar expressions will be avoided in the future.

The United Nations has expressed concern about the situation of Afghan women and girls at a time when speaking at a press conference the Deputy Spokesman of the US State Department said the lack of an inclusive government and the presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan, and the lack of respect for the rights of Afghan women and girls are major obstacles to the recognition of IE.

We asked the opinion of the IE in this regard, but they did not respond us until the publication of the report, but earlier, the Interim Government of Afghanistan has always denied such statements of the world and called it Afghans’ domestic issue.
