Zalmay Khalilzad, the US Former Special Representative for Afghanistan, said that a meeting on Afghanistan will be held in Qatar next month under the leadership of the UN Secretary-General.
Khalilzad said in a tweet: “On May 01, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will host a meeting of Special Representatives for Afghanistan from around the world in Doha. I welcome the initiative and suggest four measures. The first is that the full implementation of the Doha Agreement must be accepted as a common goal. Second, considering the current conditions in Afghanistan, a map or strategy is needed for its implementation.”
Khalilzad seems optimistic for the meeting that important decisions will be made about Afghanistan.
He suggested the appointment of a joint delegation to directly discuss the important issues with the IE.
He added: “Thirdly, in order to create a strategy or map, the UN Secretary-General and special representatives should have a meeting with the Taliban during the negotiations. The fourth Secretary-General should appoint a personal envoy for the purpose, to work with Afghans and other internationals in the formulation of policies.”
Meanwhile, the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammad, said in an American research center that a meeting on Afghanistan will be held in Qatar under the leadership of the UN Secretary-General, which will be attended by all parties.
Amina Mohammad added that there will be discussions and negotiations on solving the problems in the meeting.
She added: “In the next two weeks, the representatives of the region and the world will meet with the UN Secretary-General regarding Afghanistan. The purpose of holding the meeting is to find a solution. Our hope from holding the meeting is to find the ways to bring us back to the recognition of the Taliban, whether it is formal recognition or conditional recognition.”
It is expected that, along with the current situation in Afghanistan, the international concerns and demands will be shared and salvations to these problems will be discussed in the meeting in Qatar.
Despite efforts the IE did not disclose its opinion regarding the meeting in Qatar.
