Doctors at Herat Regional Hospital say that the hospital currently has the necessary facilities for brain and neurological surgery and performs dozens of regular surgical operations every month.

According to doctors, between 45 to 50 brain and nerve surgeries are carried out monthly. These include the removal of brain tumors, treatment of spinal disc problems, as well as brain and neurological injuries caused by traffic accidents.

Barakatullah Mohammadi, head of the Neurosurgery Department at Herat Regional Hospital, said:
“Thank God, emergency cases and urgent surgeries have been performed here for the past several years. Only some endoscopic cases are referred abroad because we currently lack the necessary equipment. We also do not yet have facilities for radiotherapy.”

Neurosurgeon Dr. Abdul Ghafour Homan stated:
“Various cases related to brain and nerve surgery are referred here. Most patients suffer from trauma or traffic accident injuries, the number of which has increased over the past two years. Patients with brain tumors and spinal disc problems also frequently seek treatment here.”

Officials at Herat Regional Hospital added that patients not only from the western zone provinces, but also from Helmand, Kandahar, and several other provinces, travel to Herat for treatment.

According to hospital officials, around 90% of brain and neurological diseases are now treated and operated on at Herat Regional Hospital, and only 10% of patients are referred to foreign countries for treatment.

Doctors say that if facilities for radiotherapy and fixation surgeries are provided, the remaining 10% of patients could also be treated inside the country.

Neurosurgery specialist Azizur Rahman Jami said:
“Although some new equipment has been provided, we still need additional tools. For example, we lack a fluoroscope, which is critically important. This device is essential for treating patients who require spinal fixation. These surgeries are performed in Herat, but outside the regional hospital.”

Meanwhile, residents of Herat say their trust in domestic medical facilities and specialist doctors has increased recently, and they are pleased to receive treatment inside the country instead of traveling abroad.

Herat resident Sayed Jawed said:
“Patient care at the hospital has improved compared to the past; both doctors’ efforts and medical facilities have increased.”

Patient Sayed Amir said:
“Services here have greatly improved compared to before. I thank the doctors and officials.”

According to public opinion, progress in brain and neurological surgeries inside the country has not only made treatment easier for patients but has also reduced high costs and the difficulties of traveling to foreign countries.
