WFP to Limit Assistance to Afghans Due to Budget Shortfalls

While according to the international organizations figures, the graph of hunger and poverty is on the rise in Afghanistan, the World Food Program (WFP) has recently warned of reducing its assistance in Afghanistan.

WFP said it is limiting the range of aid to Afghans due to the lack of budget and will cover only five million people per month.

WFP added in its recent report that it has reached more than 15 million needy Afghans in 2023, but most of them are deprived of aid due to the lack of budget.

The report reads: “Since the beginning of 2023, the World Food Program has provided humanitarian assistance to 15.4 million needy Afghans. It should be mentioned that due to the lack of budget, we could not cover 8 million needy people.”

The program estimated in its report that considering the humanitarian situation, 15.3 million Afghans may face severe food shortages by October 2023.

According to the report, more than one billion dollars in donations are needed to reach the needy Afghans in the coming winter.

The report reads: “The World Food Program reduces the number of aid to the needy people to five million every month due to the lack of budget. WFP needs more than one billion dollars in donations for the international humanitarian aid mission in the coming winter.”

Meanwhile, economists believed that although these organizations have provided aid to a certain extent in Afghanistan, the bad economic situation of Afghans and the existence of a wide wave of unemployment cause the aid to be insufficient.

The experts requested that international organizations should work on permanent and basic solutions to free Afghans from economic problems.

The World Food Program has mentioned Afghanistan as one of the neediest countries where hunger is in a high level and there is a shortage of food.

WFP mentioned political changes, conflicts, banning women from work and restrictions on girls’ education as the main cause of the problem in Afghanistan.
