SIGAR: The US Still Busy, Implementing Five Major Projects in Afghanistan

The US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) published its recent report, saying that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is still implementing five major projects in Afghanistan in the field of education.

It is stated in the report that these projects are being implemented by the Special Section of Social Services of the American aid agencies, which started in 2014 and are planned to continue by the end of 2023.

The report reads: About 165 million and 600 thousand dollars have been allocated for the implementation of these projects, of which about 131 million and 500 thousand dollars have been spent so far. These projects have been directly affected by the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education. This program is now working on building the capacity of girls’ higher education in areas that the Taliban have authorized for girls.”

After the IE seized power in Afghanistan, these American education projects have concentrated on training and education for girls in online education and midwifery.

According to the SIGAR report, the most of the mentioned special funds have been spent on strengthening education in Afghanistan and the least fund has been allocated for the success programs of students in Afghanistan.

The report reads: “The amount spent in the strengthening of education in Afghanistan is approximately 47 million and 198 thousand dollars.

For keeping schools active: $40 million spent.

“Let Girls Learn” Program: $29 million spent.

“Supporting Student Success” program in Afghanistan: $13 million spent.

American University of Afghanistan technical capacity building program, about 15 million and 324 thousand dollars spent.”

After the 2021 political revolution in Afghanistan, although the American University of Afghanistan has been transferred to Doha, the money allocated by the US is still being paid.

SIGAR disclosed the US education projects in Afghanistan at a time when the US State Department has repeatedly stated that the US is still providing the most humanitarian assistance to Afghans.
