Thomas West, the US Special Representative for Afghanistan is travelling to Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey.
According to the US Department of State, West will talk with the officials of these countries in addition to the Afghans living there.
He will talk to former Afghan politicians, civil activists, journalists and human rights activists on various issues.
However, political analysts believed that talking to recurring political figures is futile and the United States of America should directly talk to the leaders of the current government of Afghanistan.
“If the United States of America wants to talk to end the crisis in Afghanistan, then instead of talking to recurring political figures and those responsible for the crisis, it should come to Afghanistan and should talk to the new political figures in Afghanistan, who have a plan, he should talk to the IE, but the US does not want the problem to be resolved.” Political commentator Umar Nahzat commentated
Analysts deemed that Thomas West’s recent visits exacerbate the crisis, instead of solving the problem.
They requested that if the United States of America really wants to solve the problem of Afghanistan, then it should work closely with the officials of the IE and bypass the third countries and the previous political figures.
“I think that Thomas West’s visit does not solve the issue of Afghanistan, but makes it more controversial. If the United States of America really wants to put an end to the problem of Afghanistan, then it should talk to the officials of the IE. Going to Doha, Dubai, and Turkey will not resolve it.” Said Amanullah Hotaki, a political analyst
On the other hand, some others consider it important to talk with former politicians and keep them involved in the issues related to Afghanistan and added that the US should continue to talk with both the Interim Government of Afghanistan and politicians outside the country, until a government accepted by the people should be established in Afghanistan.
Political activist Kamal Nasir Usuli uttered: “It is good that Thomas West is meeting Afghan politicians, because a government accepted by all Afghans has not yet been established in Afghanistan, so it is good that the United States of America and the international community are talking with both the current Interim Government of Afghanistan and Afghan political figures living abroad in order to reach an agreement on the establishment of a government based on Afghan people’s will.”
Aziz Ma’araj, a political affairs analyst, deemed that the United States of America wants to recommence intra-Afghan negotiations in Doha for its own purposes and gives more concessions to those who protect US’s interests.
Ma’araj added: “The US is trying with its allies to restart intra-Afghan negotiations in Doha to resolve the Afghanistan issue, and the US is not very honest about its goals and is referring to those who protect the US’s interests and the former Afghan politicians, who have now left Afghanistan, are loyal to protect the interests of the United States.”
The US Department of State declared in a statement that Thomas West will meet with local officials and Afghan living in these countries from April 11- 18.
